Boost Your Immune SystemThere is a lot of information out there on what will help keep colds and flu at bay. We've narrowed it down a bit for you so that you can make the best of this cold and flu season.
1. Vitamin D. Research shows that vitamin D deficiency leads to increased risk of many cancers and heart disease, not to mention lowered immune functioning, sleep dysfunction and increases in chronic pain. Most people do not receive enough vitamin D, so it is important to supplement with vitamin D. More about Vitamin D. 2. Frequently Washing Hands. One of the most important things you can do to prevent most any illness is to wash your hands frequently. Washing hands reduces the risk of transmission of viruses and bacteria. 3. Omega Oils. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are important in the composition and function of every cell in the body. It is the function of your cells that determines your ultimate health. The health of your cells influences your immune function, ability to heal, hormone levels, heart function, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, digestion, moods, etc. 4. Get a full night's sleep. Everybody's different: your body may need anywhere from 6 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Whatever your personal sleep requirement is, get it! Sleep has been linked to balanced hormone levels (including human growth hormone and the stress hormone, cortisol), keeping weight down, clear thinking and reasoning, improved mood, and vibrant, healthy skin. 5. Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Massage Therapy. Each modality benefits the immune system tremendously. Whether it is relieving tension and stress with a massage, aiding the nervous system with chiropractic, or using specific points on the body to improve immune health with acupuncture, these healing practices will go a long way in preventing colds and flu. 6. Drink your lemons. Lemon is the ideal food for restoring acid-alkali balance. Drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice in water, or adding it to tea, salad dressings (in place of vinegar), baking or cooking, helps maintain the body's internal "climate" at a pH which supports healthy bacteria instead of the viruses and harmful bacteria which thrive in more acidic environments. Apple cider vinegar is another great way to improve your body's alkalinity, but the taste of lemons is much more pleasant! 7. More fruits and veggies, less sugar. Fruits and vegetables contain a multitude of vitamins and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy. Try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables per day and making sure to include as many different colours to get the most benefits. Where fruits and vegetables are a boost to your health, sugar, especially refined sugar will tax your immune system, making you more susceptible to infections and diseases. |
